1)  St. Louis Shipwreck

Resting just downstream of the Cape Vincent boat ramp. The St. Louis shipwreck offers a rare shallow-water window into 19th-century maritime history. Built in 1864, this wooden steamer once served as one of the hard-working vessels that powered Great Lakes and coastal commerce during the height of the sail and steam era. After more than 50 years in service, the steamer was abandoned in 1914 and was left to settle in approximately 15 feet of water. With its accessible depth, the wreck is a popular destination for scuba divers, snorkelers, kayakers, and history enthusiasts who can explore the remains of a bygone maritime age just beneath the surface. Located just off the information signage about her at East End Park, the St. Louis Shipwreck lies as a quiet reminder of the vessels and crews that once shaped transportation and trade along North America's inland waterways.

2) Red and Green Buoys

The red and green buoys at East End Park in Cape Vincent, with their bright colors against the backdrop of the river, create a striking visual landmark. Since the park sits right on the waterfront, these buoys aren't just random decorations—they carry a lot of meaning for anyone familiar with the river. They are near where Lake Ontario ends and the St. Lawrence River begins. In maritime navigation, red and green lateral buoys mark the edges of a safe channel. Having both a red and a green buoy at East End Park visually symbolizes a "gateway" between the Great Lakes and the ocean-bound shipping highway.

3) Rose & Crown Iron Gun

Located in East End Park is an 11-foot-long, 18-pounder cannon commonly called an iron gun and marked with the Rose and Crown Cypher of Charles II. It was cast in Sussex, England, in 1678. Originally serving on the Royal Navy ship HMS Vanguard, this historic weapon was brought to New York in 1735. Over its century of active service, it was captured by the French at Oswego in 1756, recaptured by the British in 1760, and finally stationed just down-river from Cape Vincent on Carleton Island in 1779. Prior to the War of 1812, it was sunk by the British in deep water off the island. Recovered by scuba divers in the 1960s, it is on display courtesy of New York State. From the information signage panel, Carleton Island is clearly visible.

4) Fort Haldimand

Looking out across the water from East End Park in Cape Vincent, Carleton Island dominates your view directly to the north, sitting roughly three miles away in the south channel of the St. Lawrence River. The island appears as a large, peaceful and heavily wooded landmass stretched across the horizon. It spans over 1,200 acres and is primarily a quiet, private community home to seasonal cottages. Though mostly hidden by trees today, the high ground visible from East End Park hides the ruins of Fort Haldimand, a massive British military outpost and naval shipyard built in 1778 during the American Revolutionary War. The informational signage in East End Park highlights the vital strategic role that Fort Haldimand and Carleton Island played during that conflict.

5)  DEC Fisheries

The DEC Fishery Building welcomes visitors with an informative historical signage that traces the property's fascinating evolution from its 1856 roots as a stone grist mill to its transformation into a federal fish hatchery in 1895. Today, the location serves as a bustling state-operated research facility—housing the Lake Ontario Fisheries Unit and the research vessel Seth Green—dedicated to studying and tracking the aquatic health of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. While it remains a hub for cutting-edge environmental science, the site beautifully blends community life with education; from Memorial Day through September, visitors can explore a public aquarium showcasing native fish from the Thousand Islands region, or enjoy the recreational grounds featuring picnic areas, a harbor-view gazebo, and accessible fishing docks

6) Historic Anchors

Located in the Village Green, a picturesque public park in the heart of downtown Cape Vincent, are relics from Cape Vincent's maritime past. There are two historic anchors, which were recovered from the waters near the breakwater. Featuring the classic long shank and wooden stock designs of the 19th century, these anchors were lost when the village was a pivotal hub for maritime navigation. Displayed in the park, visitors can touch and feel these large, solid artifacts. Today, these preserved behemoths are proudly displayed at the Village Green as rugged monuments to the sailors and shipwrecks that define the region's nautical heritage.

7) Cape Vincent Historical Museum

The museum serves as a dedicated guardian of the unique history and heritage of the Town and Village of Cape Vincent. Housed in a historic stone building that dates back to the early-to-mid-19th century, the museum offers a deep dive into the region's storied past, including its strong ties to French settlers and Napoleonic history. Visitors can explore extensive exhibits detailing the local fishing industry, the ferry system connecting Cape Vincent to Wolfe Island, and the strategic military importance of the region up to the War of 1812. By preserving everything from vintage artifacts to genealogical records, the museum provides an essential link between the modern community and the river- dependent life of its ancestors.

8)  Fish Ponds Structures

The Hatchery Ponds Large concrete structures that were once part of the fish ponds in Cape Vincent. The story begins in 1895 when a historic 1856 stone grist mill on the waterfront was transformed into one of the nation's first federal fish hatcheries. For seven decades, the facility's large outdoor rearing ponds were a local landmark, teaming with millions of lake trout, white fish, and yellow perch destined to stock the waters of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. These ponds were a popular community attraction where visitors could walk the grounds and see the big fish swimming in the open air. In 1965, the federal government closed the hatchery and transferred the property to the New York State, which shifted the mission from mass fish production to scientific research. Their legacy lives on through the DEC fisheries research station and the aquarium housed within that same original stone mill.

9) Breakwater Lighthouse

As a rare relic of maritime history, the Breakwater Lighthouse stands as a testament to the wooden tower designs that once dotted the Great Lakes. Originally one of a pair of identical square structures guarding the harbor, it served for decades as a vital guide for sailors. To preserve its structural legacy, the lighthouse was moved from its location on the breakwater to its current land-based home on Route 12E in 1951. Today, it remains a nostalgic landmark, offering passersby a glimpse into mid-20th-century efforts to honor and salvage the region’s nautical heritage

10)  Market Street Cemetery

Located within the village of Cape Vincent, New York, the historic Market Street Cemetery serves as a resting place for many of the community's earliest pioneers, residents, and notable historical figures. Serving as one of the area's older burial grounds, its gravestones include markers dating back to the early and mid-19th century, bearing the names of prominent local families, early physicians, and even veterans of the Revolutionary War. Notably, the cemetery holds a somber connection to regional maritime history, as it became the final resting place for victims whose bodies washed ashore following local shipwrecks and disasters along the nearby St. Lawrence River. Today, the quiet grounds stand as a vital genealogical and historical touchstone, preserving the rich, centuries-old legacy of the Cape Vincent community.
